Latest Watercolor Painting Demonstration

This is my latest watercolor demonstration painting which I have loaded onto my PaintingWithWatercolors wetsite. 

The painting is titled "Rising Mist" and is of an early morning scene on San Diego harbor with the mist rising. It is based on a photo my wife took a number of years ago as she was sailing out of the harbor on the way down to Mexico.

The demonstration takes you from the initial photographic inspiration, through how to draw boats and objects into the light, the initial wet on wet under wash, how to create a mist effect with watercolor paint, painting boat details and finishing with how to paint the reflections on the water.

Simple watercolor painting of boats and water

This is my latest demonstration for relatively new watercolor artists. It covers various watercolor painting techniques such as wet on wet and wet on dry as well as dry brush.

Subjects such as the drawing of simple boats and perspective are also covered.

The location of this scene is Pittwater a beautiful Sydney, Australia, coastal suburb and is based on a photo I took early one morning.

The painting is only about 7" x 5" but for the more experienced artists could certainly be painted larger - however for the beginner watercolorist I recommend sticking to this smaller dimension.

His and Hers

His and Hers

This is my most recent watercolor painting. It was painted on Arches Cold Press watercolor paper, 300 g.s.m.weight. Its painted size is 27cm x 37cm.

The painting was done as a commission for a lady to give to her husband for their anniversary. They met many years ago when they parked their boats next to one another.  His is the one on the left..

Because of the message to the painting, I left out all other boats and buildings and am very happy with the final result.

I will be publishing this painting as a demonstration on my watercolor painting site in the future.
